Yvette Kraft - Characters and Their Vignettes

I am another artist at this coop, Studio Gallery. I have just seen Yvette Kraft's show and it is marvelous. Her naivete and colorful paintings are quirky and intriguing. Her equally quirky drawings are quite memorable. Her work has a unique voice and if you missed this show, you should stop by the gallery and ask Adah Rose to pull out some of Yvette's work. It's worth the effort.

Solo Show: Elena Stamberg: Madonnas Assembled

Elena Stamberg's dynamic mixed-media sculptures include elements ranging from natural wood and gourds to hand-knitted drapes of llama wool. Through her Madonnas, the artist claims to be "exposing a life with humble materials" to her audience, eliciting the desire to touch and become intimate with the work. Stamberg constantly participates in what she calls a "challenging journey" to bring together a variety of mediums in her search for "the perfect balance." In her move from the two-dimensional to sculpture, she has successfully developed a subtle but powerful body of work.

Duo Show: Steve Fleming: Abstractions of Earth's Forces and Fulvia Musti Ciarla: Bulerias

Through strong geometric form and vivid brushwork, painter Steve Fleming pulls from his impressionist background an attempt to evoke an abstract sense of the creation of the Earth. Fleming believes in stepping outside of his comfort zone when creating: "Art is not just about safety ... it is about creative expression and personal vision." Fleming's strong sense of dramatic color interacts, rather than clashes, with the abstract yet expressive work of Fulvia Musti Ciarla. Using recycled materials, Ciarla enrolls in a deliberate yet subconscious reaction to flamenco music. "Music infuses these new works," states the artist. Each work resonates with a sense of rhythm that commands the audience to partake in Ciarla's passion and admiration of flamenco.

Hosted by Fred Joiner, curator and host of the American Poetry Museum's Intersections at the Honfleur Gallery and poet-in-residence at Busboys and Poets, Shirlington.

In August of 2000, Christopher K.P. Brown self-published his own collection of poems, Content, and sold over 200 copies at $20 a piece. He was only 16 years old. Since then he's written two more books of poetry and recorded four spoken word albums, POETRY: a hip hop album being the latest. He's currently working to establish his company, 2 Pens & Lint, as a well known and respected company that concentrates on building poetry as an industry in which poets are able to become financially stable through their art. When he created 2 Pens & Lint simply as a website back in 2003, Christopher was only 18 years old. Since then he's studied the poetry industry; he's had successes and failures in poetry; but most importantly he feels that he's still young enough to live up to the 2 Pens & Lint motto of moving towards "A New Direction In Poetry".
HOME is on every THIRD Friday of the month at Hillyer Art Space.

Two New "Fashion Forward" Shows to Open at The TM

Two exhibitions with different takes on Japanese fashion are opening at The Textile Museum next Saturday, October 17. While the main show, Contemporary Japanese Fashion: The Mary Baskett Collection, includes over thirty finished garments (think everything from gowns to jumpsuits) the partner show Fabrics of Feathers and Steel: The Innovation of Nuno assembles the ingredients - examples of the shimmering and often playful fabrics from the Nuno Corporation of Japan. Each show promises to be inspiring - look forward to an innovative installation, public programs and (of course) great new exhibition-themed goods in the museum shop. See you next Saturday!
