Studio Gallery Intern Art Review
Jan Willem van der Vossen
"Nervous Wreck"
Approaching Jan Willem van der Vossen's painting, "Nervous Wreck", one certainly feels unsettled. The neon orange nervous system seems to work itself into a frenzy that culminates in the firing off of hot pink and pea green bloated appendages. The jarring color palette and the erratic crawling of the organic matter radiate heat and anxiousness. However, contrary to it's title, the painting is carefully planned and executed; the edges of each form are carefully defined against the background and the paint evenly spread. It taunts the viewer into tilting it off its perfectly hung axis, or to at least maniacally chain smoke in front of it; anything to make its tidy presentation truer to what the label suggests.

Global Lens films @ Hillyer Art Space
Screening of My Tehran for Sale to kick off the Global Lens 2010 DC Educational Tour- Cross-cultural dialogue through film!
With a new film scheduled to show every month at Hillyer Art Space, we begin the journey with My Tehran For Sale by Granaz Moussavi.
The movie centers around a young, aspiring actress named Marzieh living in Tehran who must conceal her true artistic identity under an Iranian regime that is oppressive towards women and creatives. She falls in love with an Iranian native (Saman) who recently received citizenship in Australia. As their love grows, she must decide either to combat the mounting threat of living a life of repression and silence or to flee her home and begin life anew with her beloved. This wavering and rather dangerous divide is not the only one haunting her.

Cutting-Edge Performance and Film at The Textile Museum
INTERWOVEN: Evenings in Performance
Friday, July 23, 8-10 PM
Saturday, July 24, 8-10 PM
Join the Embassy of Denmark and The Textile Museum for two evenings of cutting-edge textile performances by international artists, hosted by INTERWOVEN.
On July 23, New York-based fashion collective threeASFOUR, whose designers hail from Lebanon, Israel, and Tajikistan, will collaborate on a performance highlighting their ethereal and sculptural approach to textile design. The July 24 program will feature a new, site-specific work by Copenhagen-based duo Henrik Vibskov & Andreas Emenius. The Circular Series, Section 4 uses a large rigid, geometric structure contrasted with explosions of color to explore human rituals, the constructions we build and social isolation. Following the performances, Sabrina Gschwandtner, founder of KnitKnit magazine, will moderate a Q&A with the artists. The evening events will also feature film screenings. Fee: $20 (each evening); advance ticket purchase required. Buy your tickets online today.
