Bavubuka pronounced as “ba voo boo ka” is a Luganda word that means the youth.

With the youth currently making-up 55% of the Ugandan population, this cohort has emerged as a demographic powerhouse.Bavubuka does not just represent the future they embody the present.

The Bavubuka Foundation evolved from a grassroots, underground crew of hip hop artists working to put deeds behind their VOICES. Today the Bavubuka Foundation is a fully operational nonprofit organization that passionately believes connecting youth with music and the arts can transform lives and unify diverse communities.

At Bavubuka we are dedicated to creating spaces and educational programs that nurture and empower a new generation of young leaders, in Uganda and all of Africa. VOICES that will communicate positive messages and affect positive change in their communities and the world.

Each Bavubuka project incorporates reconciliation and peace building activities by using transformative art to cultivate personal empowerment, within a united communal effort. Bavubuka provides Ugandan youth, opportunities to gain new skills, bring their own creations to life and develop relationships that connect them to their immediate community, the larger Ugandan struggle, and a global peace building movement.

Aaron Gallery: 'Structures of the Sublime' - ongoing exhibition

Thanks to all those who came to our opening Friday night! It was a huge success and fun was had by all.

The exhibition, 'Structures of the Sublime', featuring work by Josh George, Carol Engles, and Kevni Conklin, puts an expressionistic spin on the timeless narrative of a cityscape: industrialism as it relates to color, form and movement, finding beauty and energy in the chaos we are all too familiar with.

Additionally, the gallery currently features works by internationally renowned painters (and local art staples) John Blee and Javier Cabada, as well as New Mexico-based animal portraitist Linda St. Clair.

Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 11am-5pm, and by appointment.

Elena Stamberg: Madonnas Assembled


Elena Stamberg's dynamic mixed-media sculptures include elements ranging from natural wood and gourds to hand-knitted drapes of llama wool. Through her Madonnas, the artist claims to be "exposing a life with humble materials" to her audience, eliciting the desire to touch and become intimate with the work. Stamberg constantly participates in what she calls a "challenging journey" to bring together a variety of mediums in her search for "the perfect balance." In her move from the two-dimensional to sculpture, she has successfully developed a subtle but powerful body of work.

Steve Fleming: Duo Show: Abstractions of Earth's Forces


Fulvia Musti Ciarla: Bulerias


Through strong geometric form and vivid brushwork, painter Steve Fleming pulls from his impressionist background an attempt to evoke an abstract sense of the creation of the Earth. Fleming believes in stepping outside of his comfort zone when creating: "Art is not just about safety ... it is about creative expression and personal vision."

Fleming's strong sense of dramatic color interacts, rather than clashes, with the abstract yet expressive work of Fulvia Musti Ciarla. Using recycled materials, Ciarla enrolls in a deliberate yet subconscious reaction to flamenco music. "Music infuses these new works," states the artist. Each work resonates with a sense of rhythm that commands the audience to partake in Ciarla's passion and admiration of flamenco.

At 6 pm, Afrofunk orchestra Chopteeth invades the auditorium with a blend of American Funk, Afrobeat, and West African music in celebration of Man Ray, African Art and the Modernist Lens. Gallery talks at 6 and 7 pm tell the story of Man Ray, heiress Nancy Cunard, and the jazz and poetry opus Henry-Music. At 6:30 and 7:30 pm, curator Elsa Smithgall shares her perspective on the exhibition Object as Subject: Photographs of the Czech Avant-Garde. Throughout the evening DJ Todd Threats will spin in the Music Room as cash bar and light refreshments are served.

Programs related to Man Ray, African Art and the Modernist Lens are included in admission to the special exhibition; free for Phillips members. All other programs and permanent collection are by donation.

'Work', Tom Wolff in Retrospect

'Ass Against the Wall', an installation by Martha Jackson Jarvis

Ass Against the Wall explores points of resistance, endurance, and markings that pattern our lives. It is a compelling place of power where forces change, heaviness, strain, anxiety, burdens and the weight of difficulty into something else.

In a chance encounter in the mountains of Tajikistan Jarvis discovered an incredible being in a moment of clarity that bridges the void between animate and inanimate form. A moment when plants, animals, and minerals are one, even the rocks conspire to a fluid and connected greatness.

Martha Jackson Jarvis’ sculptures have been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.; the Studio Museum of Harlem, N.Y. Snug Harbor Cultural Center in Staten Island, N.Y.; Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art in Winston-Salem, N.C.; Anacostia Museum in Washington, D.C. and the Tretyakov Gallery Moscow, U.S.S.R. Her numerous awards include a Creative Capital Grant, Virginia Groot Fellowship, and National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, The Penny McCall Foundation Grant , and Lila Wallace Arts International Travel Grant.

$5 suggested donation but any support is appreciated. Proceeds go towards supporting our local artist series and future events.

Washington Project for the Arts presents the fifth installment of Coup d'Espace, a program that invites WPA member artists to stage their own exhibitions and programming in their Dupont Circle office space. For November Coup, member artists Joan Belmar and Minna Newman Nathanson will use the space to mount a joint exhibition, Influence = Convergence.

“What happens when two artists – different in almost every way – share a working space?...”

When they met, Joan Belmar, a Chilean immigrant in his thirties, was painting colorful, two dimensional works incorporating linear runes and circles. Nathanson, a native Washingtonian in her seventies, produced formal statements in monochromatic bent steel and explored reflective effects with plastic and wire. After two years of sharing a studio‐space, the artist both underwent a shift in their practice, which, in retrospect seemed to be directly influenced by each other's work.

In Influence=Convergence, these two artists present a series of 'pairings' that exemplify the the result of their sharing a work space. Please join us for the opening reception from 6-8pm on Friday, November 6th. There will be an informal talk given by the artists at 7pm.
