Washington Project for the Arts is pleased to announce the opening of our holiday gift shop, IceBox at WPA headquarters. The shop features artworks and products for sale by WPA artists.

Small works, photographs, hand sewn brooches, notecards, ornaments, jewelry, candle holders, accessories, apparel and more- made by hand by WPA member artists. Items range from $4 to $250 (most under $100, many items under $25)

The 20th Annual Small & Miniatures Show

Aaron Gallery is pleased to present a group exhibition of intimately sized paintings by over 20 artists from around the country working in a variety of expressive styles, media and techniqies. All work featured in the show is under 16''x20'' and would make a great gift for any art lover this holiday season. This is an opportunity that is not to be missed!

Additionally, the gallery currently features works by internationally renowned painters (and local art staples) John Blee and Javier Cabada, as well as New Mexico-based animal portraitist Linda St. Clair.Stop by and see some artwork!

Ahmad Alkarkhi, a young Iraqi, arrived in Washington in late August of this year, a refugee from his beloved Iraq, ready to make a new life for himself and his family. He brings with him the richness and variety of expression that was so prevalent in the vibrant culture of Baghdad in years past.

December Show at WPG

New etchings, woodcuts and rubbings by Baltimore-based Trudi Y. Ludwig will be on view in the new show, Days o' Work, at Washington Printmakers Gallery December 1^st through January 2^nd. This is Ludwig’s third show at Washington Printmakers, and her first after a three year hiatus from the privilege of working in a studio.

Using the tapestry of nature as a backdrop, Ludwig’s current work grapples with contemporary conundrums by invoking time, motion, passages, pathways and perception, all with a whiff of art historical reference. A tension of opposites pervades her work: fleeting moments versus the unfolding of geological time; sacred beauty versus secular ephemera; big versus little picture; unscripted versus premeditated; acceptance versus denial; fearless freedom versus patient control.

Ludwig has been a member of Washington Printmakers Gallery since 1995. Her work has been shown in numerous regional and national solo and juried shows. She currently teaches Art History and Drawing at the Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA), following eight years of teaching in MICA’s Printmaking Department.

Hosted by Fred Joiner, curator and host of the American Poetry Museum's Intersections at the Honfleur Gallery and poet-in-residence at Busboys and Poets, Shirlington.

Rodrick Freeman aka Rod-zilla the Blackademic has been a staple in the international spoken word scene for the last five years. Originally from California, his dynamic performances have graced stages from Sacramento to Sydney, Australia. Heralded as the "hip hop griot", Rod-zilla stuns crowds with his creative natural realism, an abundance of alliteration, and a delivery that is authentically rich and transcendent. A true representative of the Black Arts movement this Blackademic has made it his duty to kill black male stereotypes with his scholarly work, proving that the myth of the black intellectual is not a farce at all. Equipped with knowledge of self and African conviction, Mr. Freeman has set out to be in the vanguard as a Pan-Africanist. His prolific body of work details the need for economic freedom in urban communities, holistic healing and black accountability while not sparing venomous critiques on the powers that be.
