"Passing Impressions," Stunning Graphite Works on Paper by Lynn Mocarski Maurer

Gallery A is pleased to present “Passing Impressions,” an exhibit by Virginia artist Lynn Mocarski Maurer. Lynn Mocarski Maurer’s extremely detailed graphite drawings explore life through the metaphor of peonies. Life just like these delicately drawn peonies is made up of tiny details. Closer viewing is necessary in order for these details to come to life and form a collective shape.

Vulnerabilty, 25 x 31, 2015

The initial immediacy of Lynn’s work is very striking but it is only after carefully  observing the works for an extended amount of time that the viewer comes to appreciate the artist’s tremendous effort. Hundreds of hours have been meticulously poured into crafting each of these 12 individual works. The artist has labored tirelessly in order to convey this connection between everyday human life and nature.

Graphite on paper is just one medium the artist works in. Lynn works in various media. Her last Gallery A exhibit featured still life paintings in oil.

Lynn graduated with her BFA from the University of Nevada in Las Vegas. She has exhibited at numerous venues in the Washington metro area including the Corcoran Gallery of Art and Lord Fairfax Community College. In addition to these exhibitions she has done commissioned work for the Washington National Cathedral.

"Room for Blue"

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

McGee’s medium and large-scale abstract works reveal an exploration in compositional qualities as well as a palpable sensitivity to palette. The intellectual yet profoundly emotive approach to painting emerges from McGee’s extensive background in early childhood education in the arts. Her paintings have won awards and are found in private collections in the US, Europe, and in numerous corporate establishments throughout Washington, DC. Donna K. McGee treats viewers to the wonder and richness of colors and uses color to create atmosphere and emphasize forms. The imagery that is present in many of the pieces is highlighted by the use of the color blue which speaks eloquently in a language all its own. There is much that is exciting in this collection, and the overall impression is one that allows the audience to feel themselves in the role of an adventurer, daring to venture further and to see more clearly. The result is sure to speak to both the head and the heart, and remain a lasting memory for those who see it.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Lukeman Ahmad, a Kurdish, self-taught artist portrays in his works a strong sense of Kurdish spirit and identity despite his people are with "no country" and "no boarders". His vivid colors and moving shapes artistically express his profound, personal connection to the Kurdish land and its people, with a history layered with tragedy, perseverance and aspirations. Ahmad's imagination runs free as his style and paintings emphatically portray a swinging graceful dancer painted in colorful fluid shapes alongside a magical horse against a vast white background of nature. His works picture a proud cultural heritage that provides viewers a deeper understanding of the Kurdish people.

In contrast, Lukman paints the heaviness of a grief stricken woman recently widowed. She is cloaked in black and sits in front of a yellow backdrop - reflecting on the desert sands where her loved ones have said goodbye to their cherished land. Lukman's emotional range of work provides insight into the deeper meaning of Kurdish life.

Lukman Ahmad came to the United States in 2010 as a refugee. He has coped with the difficulties of adapting, learning a new language, earning a living and finding his place in the U.S. as an artist. He is a member of the Arlington Arts Gallery.

Foundry Gallery: "Touch Points II"

TOUCH POINTS II
WATERCOLORS BY KATHERINE BLAKESLEE

SAT & SUN NOON - 6:00 PM

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Katherine Blakeslee is a watercolorist whose new work is a continuing exploration of nature and places real an d imaginary, familiar and strange, at home and abroad. She is fascinated by the connections between continents and peoples represented by the sea and the the sky we share.

This show's works include images from across the world where serenity
and turbulence sometimes co-exist. To Blakeslee, watercolor embodies the interplay of factors which make up our complex world. It can be both translucent and opaque, it can move slowly or quickly, and it can transcend boundaries and even the imagination of the artist. Like our world, watercolor is never within the individual artist's complete control, sometimes in wonderful co-creation.

Katherine Blakeslee has been interested in art and creative pursuits all her life. Self-taught as a watercolorist she began to explore painting in 2003, inspired, in part, by a painting she did as a child and saved by her father.

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Peter's work is conceptual assemblage - found boxes or small painter's canvasses with tableaus of found objects and small plastic figures. Peter's pieces often feature found photographs, film negatives and lights. Peter explains, "To keep ourselves same we insists that what we do has purpose and will last and ultimately that the world makes sense. In my art I try to point to the tenuousness of that found order, and draw attention to the randomness and transient nature of our world."

For the past 20 years Peter has been advising political candidates, causes and elected officials at all levels. Over two decades he has worked for Senator Kennedy, three members of the US House and has advised organizations ranging from "America's Funniest Home Videos" to the World Life Fund. For a short time in the late 1990s, Peter exhibited work in galleries in the Washington area, abut larely he stopped producing art by 2003. Several years ago fellow part-time artist and full -time D.C. United Head Coach, Ben Olsen asked Peter to donate a few pieces to a "Ben Olsen and Friends" fundraiser for Bread for the City. The pieces sold, and Peter was back at art. This is the artist's first solo exhibit.

Foundry Gallery - New Logo and Website

1314 - 18th Street, NW
Washington, DC 20036

Foundry Gallery Launches New Logo and Website

Washington, DC (October 24, 2011) -- Foundry Gallery, Ltd., a cooperative art gallery in Washington, DC was founded in 1971. Still thriving after 40 years, the Gallery is pleased to announce its new logo and website design, viewable at www.foundrygallery.org.

Members of the gallery, committed to the gallery's future, conducted an internal fundraising campaign to collect the funds necessary for the re-design. The logo and site were developed under a contract with Brand Design, a marketing communications company in Warrenton, VA.

"The new logo and website reflects the vibrancy and variety of the artists' work," says Fran Abrams, Chair of the Gallery's website committee. "We are delighted to be able to display the work of our members on an attractive and informative site."

The Foundry Gallery, located at 1314 - 18th Street, NW, is convenient to the Dupont Circle Metro station. The gallery is open Wednesday - Friday, 1:00 - 7:00 pm, and Saturday - Sunday, noon - 6:00 pm.

The gallery includes two exhibit spaces. Shows in both spaces change monthly with a solo exhibit in one space and a members' show in the other. Under gallery policy, no artwork may be shown during more than one exhibit. Says Judy Gilbert Levey, Gallery Co-president and website committee member, "We hope community members and out-of-towners will visit our website -- and our gallery -- again and again."
