ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

An eclectic group of artists, including Foundry Gallery members and guest artists, present a diverse collection of bold, graphic paintings that combine organic elements and urban sensibilities.

The distinctive use of color, pattern and light in each work comes together to create an interactive, visual fusion that mimics the energy of improvised jazz music. Like musical riffs, the paintings call and respond to each other, producing a rhythmic harmony that is both joyful and dark.

The Artists of the Abstract Collective are: Ana Elisa Benavent*, Lisa Bohrer, Maruka Carvaial*, Ann Crain, Marie Crow, Denise Dittmar, Octavia Frazier, M. Jane Johnson, Katie Joselow, Cecilia Kalish, Paula Lantz and Meg MacKenzie (*Foundry Gallery member).

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Katherine Blakeslee is a watercolorist whose new work is a continuing exploration of nature and places real an d imaginary, familiar and strange, at home and abroad. She is fascinated by the connections between continents and peoples represented by the sea and the the sky we share.

This show's works include images from across the world where serenity and turbulence sometimes co-exist. To Blakeslee, watercolor embodies the interplay of factors which make up our complex world. It can be both translucent and opaque, it can move slowly or quickly, and it can transcend boundaries and even the imagination of the artist. Like our world, watercolor is never within the individual artist's complete control, sometimes in wonderful co-creation.

Katherine Blakeslee has been interested in art and creative pursuits all her life. Self-taught as a watercolorist she began to explore painting in 2003, inspired, in part, by a painting she did as a child and saved by her father.

MCA Open Studio Tour - This Weekend!

It's here! The 10th Semi-Annual Mid City Artist Open Studio Tour! In celebration, this weekend the DC Art Glass studio, along with twenty-five other artists, will be open to the general public. A wide variety of artistic mediums will be well represented including art glass, painting, mixed media, photography, metal sculpture, printmaking, and found object collage.

Come join the festivities! See where the artists create their work, explore one of DC's most vibrant neighborhoods, discover new businesses, check out new restaurants and, of course, browse & purchase fresh, new artwork!

NEW WORK AT DC ART GLASS

During the tour, Robert's latest series of kilnformed vessels will be on display. These pieces were created using special reactive glass from Bullseye Glass in Portland, Oregon and they incorporate a special multi-firing technique perfected in Northern Ireland. ABOUT THE EXHIBIT

Peter's work is conceptual assemblage - found boxes or small painter's canvasses with tableaus of found objects and small plastic figures. Peter's pieces often feature found photographs, film negatives and lights. Peter explains, "To keep ourselves same we insists that what we do has purpose and will last and ultimately that the world makes sense. In my art I try to point to the tenuousness of that found order, and draw attention to the randomness and transient nature of our world."

For the past 20 years Peter has been advising political candidates, causes and elected officials at all levels. Over two decades he has worked for Senator Kennedy, three members of the US House and has advised organizations ranging from "America's Funniest Home Videos" to the World Life Fund. For a short time in the late 1990s, Peter exhibited work in galleries in the Washington area, abut larely he stopped producing art by 2003. Several years ago fellow part-time artist and full -time D.C. United Head Coach, Ben Olsen asked Peter to donate a few pieces to a "Ben Olsen and Friends" fundraiser for Bread for the City. The pieces sold, and Peter was back at art. This is the artist's first solo exhibit.

Recent Trip to Lybster, Scotland Earlier this week I returned from an amazing trip to the UK, where I attended a professional artist residency. The residency, entitled "In Place: Kiln Glass in the Built Environment", took place at North Lands Creative Glass which is located in Lybster, a small fishing village on the North Coast of Scotland. I was honored to be invited to attend by Bullseye Glass and the residency facilitators, Steve Klein and Richard Parrish. The residency focused on making kiln formed glass that exists in and is inspired by the built and natural environment in which a building is located. Be sure to stop by my studio during the MCA tour to see several stunning images taken during the residency and find out how this experience is expected to greatly affect the approach to my future work.

Join us this Saturday, May 29th for an artist talk with Valentine Nazarian Wolly. Wolly will be discussing her methods, influences and taking questions regarding her current show at Hillyer Art Space: Flipped.

Reflection, repetition and pattern are central themes in Flipped, a new series of paintings by Valentine Wolly. Examining the way in which reflected surfaces often play tricks with our senses of the "real" world and the "other" world created by these surfaces, Wolly hones her techniques to create images from natural distortions that could be mistaken for the work of a surrealist or Photoshop expert.
Born in Iran and raised in America, Wolly grew up in New York City, where she enjoyed the sociability and warmth of a large family in a closely knit Iranian community. She received her undergraduate degree from Queens College before moving to the Washington, DC area, where she later received her MFA in painting from George Washington University. Hillyer Art Space's Artist Advisory Committee is proud to present Wolly with her first solo exhibition in the DC area, as a result of her selection from the 2009 Call for Artists.

Mr. Acquadro, in his first solo show at Studio Gallery exhibits a series of paintings influenced by Master Painters from the Past,

Downstairs Gallery: Elizabeth McNeil Harris "Blues" In a spare, minimal and elegant style, Ms Harris uses the human body as muse for her life drawings.

Also showing, Freda Lee-McCann "Fragments of Tradition", Collage, Ink and Watercolor on Paper. Ms Lee-McCann draws on a rich tradition of Chinese calligraphy and watercolor to produce works of great depth and originality, drawing from both the contemporary and the classic.

The Artist Reception for these three wonderful shows will be Saturday April 10th from 4 -6 pm.

Don't forget upstairs we have a very special treat of "Only What You Can Carry with You": Works by James Cassell, Peter E. Harper, Joren A. Lindholm, and Zade Ramsey
